Superintendent’s Update
Dear parents and staff,
The last few weeks of 2025 offer a chance to reflect back and look forward as we consider lessons learned from the past and opportunities for the future.
Since I began working with the Board of Education in July, I have appreciated the efforts being made to shape programs and services to serve student needs during complex times. Our Strategic Plan is a “road map” and a declaration of what we will achieve. We don’t waver from that. It is evidence-informed and central to our focus, even in times where budget resources, enrolment patterns, and staffing levels can create challenges. In all our work, we continue to adapt so that our commitment to put Students at the Centre is being achieved.
Our system’s success relies on our connection to community and what that relationship means in the educational context. Our schools aren’t places that exist parallel to but apart from families, neighbourhoods, and communities. We, the Kamloops-Thompson School District, are part of you and you are part of us. That was evident in the response to the school fire at Westmount Elementary. There was no room for “us and them” as we navigated that situation. It was, and continues to be, one team, working together.
In countless other examples, the strength of the community connection is evident in the contributions made by individuals and organizations who volunteer time and resources to support opportunities for students. It is also seen in the outreach initiatives from our schools to their communities. At this time of year, we see strong community engagement in activities across so many of our schools, with seasonal concerts, multi-cultural activities, fundraising events, and support for those who are less fortunate. Research shows that strong school-community partnerships contribute to better futures.
Whatever the circumstance and whenever the season, we get it right when relationships, encouragement, and deep, scaffolded learning are central to our core purpose. Schools are in the business of improving students’ life chances, and our work is foundational to the development of every child’s potential and their capacity to contribute to the communities where they live. We strive to meet that standard and are grateful for the partnerships that support those efforts.
Last week, the Board of Education announced the appointment of Mike St. John as Kamloops-Thompson's next Superintendent of Schools and CEO, starting in early 2026. This is an exciting milestone for the future of the district. Mike will bring thoughtful, collaborative, and strategic leadership to his new role. His track record is one of authentic commitment to staff and students, and I know he is excited to continue that journey in our district.
December is a time for celebration and connection. Across the district, planning for winter concerts and seasonal activities is underway. These celebrations create opportunities for students to showcase their talents and learnings and for families to come together as a community—reminding us of the joy and creativity we want to see in our classrooms every day.
As the winter break approaches, I hope you find time to rest, recharge, and enjoy moments with family and friends. Thank you for all you do to support students and each other.
Sincerely,
Mike McKay
Superintendent
