Aboriginal Transitions Day to Post-Secondary

SD73 has once again partnered with Thompson Rivers University (TRU) for the annual Aboriginal Transitions Day, providing an opportunity for Aboriginal secondary learners in grade 10 to experience a day on campus.

“It’s important to start planning before a student is in grade 12, and that’s why we are focused on grade 10 for this transition day,” said Mike Bowden, District Principal for Aboriginal Education. “And because we want to give all our students the experience, at graduation, of crossing the stage with dignity, opportunity, and options, we need to provide them with days like this. We want them to get comfortable with the idea of post-secondary education so they can see themselves on one of these paths.”

During the event, the roughly 100 registered participants receive information regarding post-secondary options available in both academic and trades streams. Students learn about the supports and mentors available for post-secondary Aboriginal learners and listen to stories and experiences from current post-secondary learners.

Presenters for this year’s Transitions initiative include TRU Executive Director for Indigenous Education Tina Matthew, SD73 Superintendent Rhonda Nixon, Partnership Transitions Coordinator for Trades and Technology Dwayne Gieger, as well as a student panel comprised of TRU students from various programs. Departmental tours led by TRU recruiter Any Watters are also offered as a way for SD73 students to familiarize themselves with the campus.

For SD73, one of the purposes of this event is to address equity in school completion for Aboriginal learners. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission: Calls to Action, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People, and the Auditor General of BC’s report on Aboriginal Education all point to the need for public education to create equitable opportunities and options for Aboriginal students.

The District hopes to continue partnering with TRU in offering this enriching experience for its Aboriginal learners. By providing District Aboriginal learners with access to post-secondary options and creating an atmosphere of safety and inclusion, SD73 continues to work towards creating parity.
