A group of highschoolers recently came together to participate in Battle of the Books: Reboot, a reading motivation competition for students in grades 8 to 12.

Roughly 20 students from Valleyview (VSS), Westsyde (WSS), and South Kamloops Secondary (SKSS) engaged in friendly competition which consisted of three rounds of Jeopardy.

“In between each round of Jeopardy, we had a different kind of challenge,” explained co-organizer Dianne Bell, Teacher Librarian (TL) at VSS, who has been running the program with TL Aleasha Kachel of WSS and TL Trisha Rimmer of SKSS since 2018. “This year each school had to pitch one of the books as THE book everyone should read - like Canada Reads - and in the second break, students had an escape or breakout box challenge based on the novel The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness.”

In previous years, students have done a loose parts challenge based around a theme in the books and a Trashion Show, where teams had to create the costume of a character from a specific novel but only use found items - nothing purchased.

This year, the home team, Valleyview Secondary, came out victorious.

“It has been a fantastic and fun thing to help organize and it's always a great group of students to work with - every teacher's dream!,” said Bell.
